  • CRC Requirements & Guidelines

    CRC Requirements & Guidelines

The Government of Canada has required that all new E-cigarette devices & accessories are to be CRC-compliant and CRC-certified. CRC stands for Child Resistant Containers. What does this mean to Canada Vapes consumers? In short, the government is making it so devices are child-proof to prevent our youth from getting into the tanks, pods, and glassmakers that hold or store e-liquid. This is a good thing for vaping as it reduces harm for children as consuming these can be dangerous! It may mean a little extra work for filling e-liquid but in the long run, it is an easy, common sense step forward for the CRC compliance in the Canadian vaping industry.

CRC Certified would be devices that are filled by the person using it, devices like:

    • Tanks
    • Coils & Atomizers
    • Cartridges & Pods
    • Open Pod Systems

CRC Compliant devices would include, devices that are disposable and the consumer would not fill, such as:

    • Disposable Vaping Devices
    • Sealed and/or Pre-filled Cartridges & Pods
    • Press-To-Fill Devices

What does this mean for you?
This may affect you if you were to purchase a kit or accessory that you have in the past. Upon opening your purchase, it may look the same until you are to fill the device, there may be something blocking where you fill the liquid that may need to be maneuvered out of the way. There may also be a a lock, almost like a switch that has to be held to release the coil. All of these extra steps are ensuring that our children & youth are not being harmed by the e-liquid inside.

We have until July 1st, 2021 to have our devices to be CRC-compliant or CRC-certified. After that, devices that do not have the CRC sticker may not be able to be sold. This is happening across Canada and Canada Vapes moving forward will carry only CRC-compliant & certified devices to ensure our youth is not vulnerable to any liquid or nicotine that is associated with any device.

This may have an effect on the Canadian vaping industry, as some of the vape companies that distribute to Canada may not have an incentive to produce these products in order to cater to the Canadian market. It is possible they may not want to design a new style for some of their devices as it is not needed elsewhere around the world (CRC compliance in the Canadian vaping industry). You can still expect the bigger names such as Aspire, Vaporesso, SMOK, and others to get on board with this as most are already doing so. In fact, click HERE to learn more about Vaporesso’s commitment to these new safety guidelines!

The Government of Canada has provided us with an industry guide named ‘Industry Guide to Vaping Products Subject to the Canada Consumer Product Safety Act’ which can be viewed by clicking HERE. • Alberta to introduce tax on vaping products in 2020

Alberta to introduce tax on vaping products in 2020

The province of Alberta is set to introduce a new tax on vaping products in 2020. This is according to the provincial budget that was released last Thursday.

Health Minister Tyler Shandro stated, “We’re looking forward to understanding the science behind e-cigarette use and the extent to which it could be a safer alternative to smoking tobacco, but our main concern will be the extent to which children and adolescents start with vaping products.”

The idea behind this provincial tax is to increase the price of vaping products to deter youth from using them. While traditionally ‘sin tax’ has been used on items like cigarettes that hurt the public health system, the concern is adding taxes to vaping products could discourage smokers looking to transition to a safer alternative.

University of Victoria professor Chris Lalonde is against the provincial vaping tax. He states: “If you accept the fact that vaping is safer than smoking –  not safe – but safer, adding a tax on the vaping is illogical because there hasn’t been a demonstration that there is anywhere near the same healthcare costs or dangers”

Lalonde goes on to suggest that taxes are the wrong way to go about preventing youth from vaping because he says youth shouldn’t be able to access age-restricted products in the first place.

From my perspective, increasing the prices of vaping products will do little to deter youth from using them. It would be more effective to increase the policing of the sales of vaping products to minors. If businesses in Alberta are selling vaping products to anyone under the legal age, they should be subjected to strict punishments and business shutdowns.

What would also be great to see, would be the government of Alberta taking all the funds received from any proposed vaping tax, and putting it into the increased policing regarding sales to minors of vaping products. They could also use these funds for improved education towards youth regarding vaping as well as other adult activities – alcohol, gambling, marijuana, etc.

This is ultimately in the bigger picture, a step in the right direction and a step away from any type of ban or severe restriction on vaping products in Alberta. We will wait and see what the results, if any, of this proposed new tax will be on vaping in Alberta.

  • Vaping to be allowed inside of Vape shops in Edmonton

Vaping to be allowed inside of Vape shops in Edmonton

In a recent decision by city council in Edmonton, Alberta, there was a unanimous vote among councilpersons to allow specialized ‘vape shops‘ in Edmonton to vape inside of their stores.

As current vapors know and understand, it is necessary for a new customer to try the product out in order to understand how it works.  Furthermore, with the various e-liquid flavours available, it is impossible to know which flavour will work for you without trying it.  With the seemingly endless push by our Federal, provincial, and local governments against vaping, e-cigarettes, and e-liquid, it is refreshing to hear something positive.

    Councilman Bryan Anderson stated:

“I would hate myself if there were people out there who found a way to quit (smoking) by using e-cigarette materials, and I stood in their way.”

This is the first step in a deep and long battle that we need to win in order to keep our government from essentially banning a scientifically proven live saving device.  As stated by a reader regarding e-cigarette testing:

“There are enough (e-cigarette) studies to break the internet  … The only issue here – none have been done under the auspices of Health Canada, so they don’t recognize them.”

So here we are, a small step in a positive direction.  Hopefully, one that many other provinces and cities thinking about e-cigarette bans to consider.

  • Calgary Alberta projected e-cigarette ban the most aggressive in Canada

Calgary Alberta projected e-cigarette ban the most aggressive in Canada

Calgary Counselors seeking one of Canada’s toughest crackdowns on e-cigarette use.

One of the last big Canadian cities to ban smoking in bars is on the brink of passing one of the country’s most sweeping ban on where e-cigarette clouds can be puffed — restaurants, stores, offices, transit, playgrounds and more.https://images.thomascookgroup.ca/thomascookCA/en/images/destinations/calgary/1.jpg

When public health officer Dr. Brent Friesen told Councillors “this is an opportunity for Calgary to show leadership,” they broke with their past habit. They voted 5-2 at committee to prohibit vaping everywhere smoking currently violates Calgary bylaws.

If full council follows through at its June 29 meeting, Calgary would have one of the most comprehensive rules against e-cigarettes in Canada — on par with Vancouver, Red Deer and Bonnyville, but tougher than what Toronto, Ottawa or Edmonton now have.

The move will come ahead of a Health Canada report that weighs in on the unregulated, often pen-shaped devices that use “e-juice” and vapour that’s generally believed to be far less harmful than burning tobacco sticks.

Recommended rules from the federal government would likely cover ingredients and marketing for these fairly new nicotine delivery devices. But bylaw officials told council they have the full jurisdiction to limit “nuisance” activities, and their survey suggested people don’t want to see puffing in many public spaces.

“I see people smoking these on the trains and it makes people very uncomfortable,” Coun. Evan Woolley said.

Some e-cigarette users themselves told the Herald they’d be fine with strict limits on where they could use them.

“It’s bothersome to people around you, as I find the e-cigarettes give off much more of a ‘cloud’ than most smokes do and it hangs in the air for a longer amount of time,” said Amy Morriset.

“The majority of vapers respect this in places like restaurants and office buildings where you are in close quarters with other people,” said Alycia Barabash.

“No big deal for me,” said Karen Borle, a former cigarette smoker who likes that e-cigarette is cheaper.

Jason Kim, a vape store operator, agreed with most of the banned areas, but urged exemptions to allow e-cigarette use and demonstrations in these shops. Some Councillors suggested a separate business licence regime to allow that.

Another e-cigarette vendor urged Councillors not to treat his product as a problem, when it’s actually a solution that helps people quit cancer-causing tobacco. Sean Rankin called e-cigarettes “deli

cious,” and doubted the medical experts’ argument that they’re a gateway drug to classic tobacco sticks, fouler smelling and dirtier.

“It’s like ice cream to dog poop,” Rankin said.

Friesen and other health advocates admitted research on e-cigarettes is limited, both on its health hazards and effectiveness as a cessation tool.

Coun. Jim Stevenson hearkened back to last decade’s debates on smoking in bars as he called the crackdown risky and premature. “This could put some businesses out of business,” he cautioned.

Bars and pubs have remained ubiquitous in Calgary, more than eight years after a much-delayed city bylaw forced customers to take their habits outside.

Council votes to look into the safety around electronic cigarettes

CBC News Posted: Mar 31, 2014 8:12 PM MT

The City of Calgary will study the effect of electronic cigarettes and look at the possibility of regulation.

Council passed a motion eight to six in favour of looking at the new devices.

Coun. Diane Colley-Urquhart introduced the motion.

“I’ve had a few complaints with people smoking these things — or I guess that’s the wrong word, ‘inhaling’ these vapours — that we don’t know what they contain because there’s no regulation around e-cigarettes.”

Right now many Calgary bars and restaurants allow customers to use the devices indoors.

E-cigarettes are battery-operated devices that use a liquid-filled cartridge that can contain mint, vanilla or other flavourings. The contents are vaporized into a mist that is breathed into the lungs. Some cartridges contain nicotine but are not approved for sale in Canada, so have to be ordered online.

    ‘What are you doing?’

Colleen Kahut-Seminuk says she uses her electronic cigarettes around the city.

“We were actually at the Jubliee Auditorium last weekend and we were using it there and the looks we were getting were a bit off, double-taking, looking, you know, ‘What are you doing?’”

Alexander Sarvucci, the manager of VapeWorld — a store on 17th Avenue S.W. — uses e-cigarettes.

“They shouldn’t treat us like smokers because we’re not smokers — we’re vapers,” he says.

“It doesn’t leave harmful [inhalants] in the air or stuff like that, like how a cigarette would, you know the smoke you can get the second-hand smoke, there’s no such thing as ‘second-hand vapor.’”

Many city governments, like New York, Chicago and Los Angeles, have banned indoor “vaping.”

City staff will come back with a report on e-cigarettes in September.
