International Study Debunks Vaping-to-Smoking Myth
An international study completed by Queen Mary University in London discovered that vaping does not lead to smoking cigarettes. There have been many myths abound about the link between vaping and smoking.
It has been a long-standing belief that vaping could act as a gateway to traditional cigarette smoking. Researchers discovered that there is no sign e-cigarettes promote or cause cigarette smoking.
“There is no sign of that, and there are some signs that they, in fact, compete against cigarettes”, states Professor Peter Hajek, Director of the Health and Lifestyle Research Unit at Queen Mary University.
“The results of this study alleviate the concern that access to e-cigarettes and other low-risk nicotine products promotes smoking.”, Hajek states, emphasizing the study’s findings.
Joey Dulay, president of the Philippine E-Cigarette Industry Association, also weighed in on the findings. “Among our peers, I have not seen any vaper turn into a smoker. It is either they continue to use e-cigarettes or quit altogether. In fact, I know a lot of former smokers who are now using e-cigarettes, which are far less harmful than combustible tobacco”.
The link between vaping and smoking: The Study
The comprehensive and in-depth study encompassed multiple countries in order to conclude its findings. Rather than encourage cigarette use, vaping seems to be causing a decline in it.
When comparing smoking rates between countries with differing e-cigarette regulations, the findings were striking.
Countries like Australia, where e-cigarette sales are banned, experienced a gradual decline in smoking. Meanwhile, in areas like the U.K. and the U.S., where e-cigarettes are more accessible, show a faster decline.
The study also examined countries where other smoking/e-cigarette alternatives are most popular, such as Sweden, where oral nicotine pouches are the delivery of choice. Japan and South Korea are also studied, where it’s common to heat tobacco rather than burn it.
While the promising study by the British university captivates attention, additional research on the link between vaping and smoking remains necessary. In the future they may be able to confirm the findings, as well as expand on the long term effects of vaping and other nicotine delivery products.
Professor Brian Ferguson, Director of the Public Health Research Programme (NIHR), shared his concluding thoughts on the researcher’s information.
“The initial findings from this study are valuable, but no firm conclusions can be drawn yet. More research is needed in this area to understand further the impact that alternative nicotine delivery products, such as e-cigarettes, might have on smoking rates,” he explained.
Many countries have opposing views and laws on e-cigarettes and smoking. It’s hard to say what will come for the future. However, it is certainly reassuring to have some light shed on current events. This news supports a favourable outlook on the future for nicotine users worldwide.

Vegetable Glycerin VG Safety
The Vegetable Glycerin we use to make our Custom Canadian E-liquid is 100% pharmaceutical grade. We use a 3:1 ratio of propylene glycol to vegetable glycerin, and have just launched a new Vegetable Glycerin based e-liquid line.
Welcome to our Vegetable glycerin safety guide. Vegetable glycerin is also known as vegetable glycerol. It is a carbohydrate that is usually derived from plant oils. It is used as a sweetener and as an ingredient in a number of cosmetic products. Vegetable glycerin is also used in place of alcohol to extract botanicals. Citation
Vegetable glycerin-based E-liquid usually contains at least 80% and as much as 92% Vegetable glycerin. This is the ingredient that produces smoke-like vapor when the e-cigarette is exhaled. Approximately 20% of all e-liquids on the market today are vegetable glycerin-based. Vegetable glycerin typically produces more vapor production than propylene glycol but has reduced throat hit. It is also slightly more viscous (thicker) and slightly sweeter than propylene glycol. Its increased thickness makes it a culprit in reducing the life of atomizers. Some e-smokers use a blend of vegetable glycerin and propylene glycol – most often 80-90% PG and 10-20% VG, and sometimes a 50/50 split VG to PG in their e-liquid.
Vegetable glycerin is approved by Health Canada for use in various forms in Canada. Products with Vegetable Glycerin can be found in various common items around your house. A few examples include:
- Sugar substitute
- In Beauty products including makeup, mousse, shampoo, bubble baths, aftershave, and deodorant
- Pet food
- Soap
- Skin and hand cream
- Baked goods – increase moisture
- As a thick gel for creams, gel capsule pills, rubs, and jellies
- Eye & ear drops, toothpaste, pastes, and many dental care products
Vegetable glycerin comes in USP grade and food grade. We sell only USP-grade (99.7% pure) vegetable glycerin on our Canadian E-cigarette Store.
Glycerine is classified by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) as “generally recognized as safe” (GRAS) and complies with specifications for the Food Chemicals Codex (FCC), United States Pharmacopeia (USP), and European Pharmacopoeia (Ph. Eur. or EP) E244. It is manufactured according to current Good Manufacturing Practices (cGMP) and is shipped according to applicable Good Trade and Distribution Practices (GTDP). Citation
Vegetable Glycerin studies
Glycerol is one of the most benign organic liquids known to man. It is hype-allergenic, non-carcinigeic, non teratogenic and non-mutagenic. It is metabolized quite easily by a process called beta-oxidation. This process results in the production of CO2 and H2O and is a quite normal, common, and natural catabolic process.
The following is a few excerpts from a study called SIDS Initial Assessment Profile of Glycerol Citation
- Glycerol is of low toxicity when ingested, inhaled, or in contact with skin
- The NOACE for local irritant effects on the upper respiratory tract is 165 mg/m3
- Glycerol is of a low order of acute oral and dermal toxicity with LD50 values in excess of 4000 mg/kw bw.
- Glycerol has a low potential to irritate the skin and the eye
- Glycerol is not a skin irritant
- Glycerol does not induce gene mutations in bacterial strains, chromosomal effects in mammalian cells or primary DNA damage in vitro
- Overall, glycerol is not considered to possess genotoxic potential
- No effects on fertility and reproductive performance were observed
- No further work is indicated by this study, because of the low hazard potential of this substance.
Health Canada on Vegetable Glycerin
Vegetable glycerin, and more generally glycerin (a.k.a. Glycerol) is labeled by the environment Canada domestic substance: “This chemical was NOT flagged by CEPA for further attention. The chemical was flagged as a low human health priority.”
Health Canada also permits Vegetable Glycerin for use as a food additive. Citation
Vegetable Glycerin Allergies & Side Effects
Allergies
The risk of being allergic to vegetable glycerin is very low. The only population that may experience problems with the metabolism of Glycerol would be diabetics owing to the anabolic hepatic pathway which can convert free Glycerol to glucose(but this would still not be an issue at the levels used in vaping).
Side Effects
The most commonly noted side effect of inhalation of e-liquid containing vegetable glycerin is a dry mouth, sore throat, and increased thirst. These symptoms usually last just a few days to a week as the body gets used to the vegetable glycerin. These symptoms can be lessened by drinking more water and liquids than usual for the first few weeks of using your e-cigarette.
If you are moving from smoking traditional cigarettes to e-cigarettes, you will find there are many side effects of quitting smoking tobacco products. It is very easy for a new user of an e-cigarette to incorrectly attribute these quitting smoking side effects to the e-cigarette, when in fact they are likely the result of your body’s reaction to quitting smoking tobacco cigarettes. Side effects of quitting smoking include Bad breath, stomach pain, nausea, constipation, increased appetite, skin breakouts, increased coughing, insomnia, depression, vagueness, irritability, gas, dry throat, nasal drip, dizziness, and vertigo. Many of these side effects of quitting smoking will be alleviated by using the e-cigarette.
We sell 100% USP grade Vegetable glycerin on our Canadian electronic cigarettes store! You can buy your vegetable glycerin with no nicotine, or with 20mg/ml nicotine.

Propylene Glycol Safety
The Propylene Glycol we use to make our Custom Canadian E-liquid is 100% pharmaceutical grade. We use a 3:1 ratio of propylene glycol to vegetable glycerin, and have just launched a new Vegetable Glycerine based e-liquid line.
Propylene Glycol is the primary ingredient in the majority of e-liquids and e-cigarette cartridges on the marketplace today. Most e-liquid contains at least 80% and as much as 92% propylene glycol. This is the ingredient that produces the smoke-like vapor when the e-cigarette is exhaled.
Propylene Glycol is approved by Health Canada for use in various forms in Canada. These include items injected, applied topically, and inhaled. Products with Propylene Glycol can be found in various common items around your house. A few examples include:
- Pharmaceuticals – Oral, inject-able and topical formulations
- Beauty products including makeup, mousse, shampoo, bubble bath, after shave, and deodorant
- baby wipes
- Pet food
- Asthma inhalers
When propylene glycol is injected, it is metabolized in the human body into pyruvic acid (a normal part of the glucose-metabolism process, readily converted to energy), acetic acid (handled by ethanol-metabolism), lactic acid (a normal acid generally abundant during digestion) [9] , and propionaldehyde. Because of its low chronic oral toxicity, propylene glycol was classified by the U. S. Food and Drug Administration as “generally recognized as safe” (GRAS) for use as a direct food additive. Citation
Propylene Glycol Studies
The following is the abstract from a study done by the following doctors: O. H. ROBERTSON, CLAYTON G. LOOSLI, THEODORE T. PUCK, HENRY WISE, HENRY M. LEMON and WILLIAM LESTER, JR. It is entitled: TESTS FOR THE CHRONIC TOXICITY OF PROPYLEXE GLYCOL AND TRIETHYLENE GLYCOL ON MONKEYS AND RATS BY VAPOR INHALATION AND ORAL ADMINISTRATION. Citation
“With a view to determining the safety of employing the vapors of propylene glycol and triethylene glycol in atmospheres inhabited by human beings, monkeys and rats were exposed continuously to high concentrations of these vapors for periods of 12 to 18 months. Equal numbers of control animals were maintained under physically similar conditions. Long term tests of the effects on ingesting triethylene glycol were also carried out. The doses administered represented 50 to 700 times the amount of glycol the animal could absorb by breathing air saturated with the glycol.
Comparative observations on the growth rates, blood counts, urine examinations, kidney function tests, fertility and general condition of the test and control groups, exhibited no essential differences between them with the exception that the rats in the glycol atmospheres exhibited consistently higher weight gains. Some drying of the skin of the monkeys’ faces occurred after several months continuous exposure to a heavy fog of triethylene glycol. However, when the vapor concentration was maintained just below saturation by means of the glycostat this effect did not occur.
Examination at autopsy likewise failed to reveal any differences between the animals kept in glycolized air and those living in the ordinary room atmosphere. Extensive histological study of the lungs was made to ascertain whether the glycol had produced any generalized or local irritation. None was found. The kidneys, liver, spleen and bone marrow also were normal.
The results of these experiments in conjunction with the absence of any observed ill effects in patients exposed to both triethylene glycol and propylene glycol vapors for months at a time, provide assurance that air containing these vapors in amounts up to the saturation point is completely harmless.
*Note: Bolding in Studies added for emphasis of the results.
Health Canada on Propylene Glycol:According to the Health Canada website, “…there are no endpoints of concern for oral, dermal or inhalation exposure to propylene glycol based on the low toxicity observed in studies near or above testing limit doses. Based on this, the USEPA did not conduct any quantitative human health risk assessments and concluded that exposure does not present a human health risk of concern.” Citation
Health Canada also permits Propylene glycol for use as a food additive. Citation
Propylene Glycol Allergies & Side effects
Allergies
The risk of being allergic to propylene glycol is very low, but some investigators believe people with eczema have a >2% chance of developing allergies to propylene glycol. If you have or have had an allergy to propylene glycol, it is very likely that you would already know about it, as such a large number of products that most of us use on a daily basis contain propylene glycol, such as deodorant, shampoo, and hair and skin products. The few people who have an irritation towards propylene glycol have found success using Vegetable glycerin as an alternative to propylene glycol in their e-cigarettes.
Side Effects
The most commonly noted side effect of inhalation of e-liquid containing propylene glycol is a dry mouth, sore throat, and increased thirst. These symptoms usually last anywhere from a few days to a week, as the body gets used to the propylene glycol. These symptoms can be alleviated by drinking more water and liquids than usual for the first few weeks of using your e-cigarette.

Side effects of quitting smoking include Bad breath, stomach pain, nausea, constipation, increased appetite, skin breakouts, increased coughing, insomnia, depression, vagueness, irritability, gas, dry throat, nasal drip, dizziness, and vertigo. Many of these side effects of quitting smoking will be reduced by using the e-cigarette. Personally, I was nearly symptom-free when I made the switch from tobacco cigarettes to e-cigarettes, but I did notice my throat was often dry, and for a few days I woke up with a sore throat.
We sell 100% USP grade Propylene Glycol on our Canadian electronic cigarettes store! You can buy your propylene glycol with no nicotine, or with 20mg/ml nicotine.

My Journey – Testimonial:
My name is Howie, and I started CanadaVapes.com in September of 2010. I am 38 years old and the father of two beautiful children, Joel who is 10, and Sophia is nearly 7. I would like to take this opportunity to tell you my personal e-cigarette story.
Cigarettes had an allure, I started smoking cigarettes early in high school, as a way to rebel and gain independence. Back in the late 80’s, there wasn’t nearly as much negativity towards tobacco as there is today, and therefore it wasn’t considered a ‘big deal’ for me to smoke. In fact, there were still smoking patios at the high schools where kids went for their cigarette breaks! I enjoyed smoking very much, and had no thoughts of quitting throughout my teenage years and into my early twenties. I was not experiencing any negative effects of smoking, and still remained active in sports.
Health effects start kicking in
It was in my mid twenties when I really started thinking about quitting smoking. I had heard all of the data on smoking and cancer, emphysema, etc, and as the warnings on the cigarette packs grew, so did the negative stigma surrounding cigarettes. With more and more places going smoke free – restaurants, malls, and even bars – I wanted to be free from the burden of going outside every hour for my fix. I still enjoyed cigarettes, but was now starting to wake up on occasion with a sore throat, and cough little yummy yellow phlegm in the mornings.
Quitting is tough, I tried to quit cold turkey a number of times throughout my 20’s, but was never successful for more than a few days. I tried the patch, which made me itchy and moody, but didn’t work at all. I lasted one day and all I could think about was a cigarette. Determined to quit, I tried nicotine gum, which tasted terrible, gave me heartburn, and lasted me about 2 days before returning to cigarettes. The price of smoking had been going up since I started, from just $2.50 a pack to $6-$7 a pack, and it seemed every few months the government was issuing some additional surcharge on cigarettes just to drive the price up more.
Trying out prescription products?
I finally tried Zyban, a prescription drug that had a slightly higher success rate then patches or gums. I lasted a long time with the Zyban, going several months without a cigarette. The only problem was that the drug was causing me to not be able to eat –not a bad thing as I could lose a few pounds — but I literately would go into a restaurant starving, take two bites of my food, and feel sick to my stomach. I had to stop Zyban, but I actually started smoking a pipe for several months before eventually returning to cigarettes.
When I entered my thirties, I could really start to feel the effects of fifteen years of smoking on my body. I would wake up every morning with a buildup of phlegm that would need to be coughed up before I could start my day. Most evenings I would get a tightening in my chest, and a sharp pinch when I inhaled deeply. I was easily winded, often needing to catch my breath just walking up from my basement to my kitchen. I had an aggressive smokers cough that made me sound like I had bronchitis all the time. Cigarettes are hard on my wallet, I was also spending nearly $10 per pack of cigarettes, and smoking around a pack a day. I felt I just had to find a way to stop smoking before it was too late.
E-Cigarettes were my answer!
In late 2009 I saw an ad for an electronic cigarette on a website. I had seen e-cigarettes before a few years back, but the kits were several hundred dollars, which I just couldn’t justify spending at the time. I did some research, and found someone selling e-cigarettes in my town locally, and picked up my very first Beginners Starter Kit. Unlike some people’s success stories, my moving from traditional tobacco smoking to e-cigarettes was not an instant or immediate result. I continued to smoke, but would vape as well. I slowly (and unconsciously) over the next few weeks started vaping more often, and smoking cigarettes less. Being the winter, I would often find myself sitting in my den, having my e-smoke, and thinking how cold it was outside. I would notice a longer and longer time between cigarettes as I started to vape more.
One day, about two weeks after getting my Starter Kit a strange thing started happening. I actually started preferring the taste and feeling of vaping, over my cigarettes. I actually started disliking the taste in my mouth when I had a cigarette. When I woke up in the morning, reaching for my e-cigarette was the first thing on my mind, instead of going out for my morning cigarette. I decided about three weeks after getting my e-cigarette that the next day, when I woke up, I was simply going to go as long as I could without a cigarette, using only my e-cigarette. Well, I lasted through the day without any problems, and the next day the same thing, and the next.
Freedom from the smell of cigarettes
After just a few days being cigarette free, I really started noticing the terrible smell of cigarettes when I would be with someone who was smoking. My jacket still smelled like old cigarettes, so I washed everything I had. I found I could wash my hands in the morning, and they would smell like soap for hours! I would put on cologne, and I could smell it all day. The first physical thing I noticed was that I was coughing less and less throughout the day and that the pinching feeling in my lungs had stopped. I still got out of breath fairly easily, but could definitely feel an improvement in my breathing and lungs. I found I slept better, and overall just felt so incredibly free all the time. No longer needing to don a big coat and step outside into the Canadian winter to get my puff on.
Vape anywhere
I could vape anywhere. I remember going to my parent’s house on a Sunday for lunch and pulling out my e-cigarette, and puffing a big vape. My mom’s jaw dropped. After explaining to her how it works, she was very excited and supportive of it. Of everyone in my life, my mother was always the one nagging me to quit. Her father passed away from lung cancer when I was just a little boy, and she had always hated cigarettes and smoking.
It has now been over six years smoke-free, and I have absolutely no desire to smoke traditional cigarettes. I am so happy to be free from the burden of cigarettes in my life. Not having to have smoke breaks every hour, and not walking around stinking all day has been a huge plus for me. Feeling more energy and vitality as my body continues to heal itself from years of abuse. Words just can’t describe the appreciation I have for e-cigarettes, nor how incredibly happy I am that I found them.

E-Cigarette Testimonials
E-Cigarette Testimonials
Please read my own testimonial HERE. I am amazed at the success stories I read every day about electronic cigarettes. People with 20, 30, even 40 year addictions to cigarettes. People who have tried every possible known method to quit smoking. People who get their e-cigarette, take a puff, and start to cry, realizing that the answer is finally here. This is just a small collection of the thousands of testimonials I have read from various e-cigarette forums. These are all real people with no affiliation to any e-cigarette products or websites.
Linda Marie from E Cigarette forum:
I have been vaping for about 3 weeks now. I would take a few puffs off of an analog several times a day. Began to like the taste of the e-cig more and more but was still smoking 3 or so analogs a day. Just tried a couple of puffs on an analog and boy did it taste bad. I may be over the worst. Don’t give up if you still smoke some analogs – it just took me some time to lose my taste for them. The morning coughing stopped within a few days and my lungs started to clear by the end of the first week and this gave me the hope to keep going. I am SO glad I found e-cigs and this forum.
AZVAPS from E Cigarette forum:
I have been vaping exclusively (no analogs) for about 6 weeks. I used to cough a lot, especially in the morning. I also had tons of yucky phlegm with my cough. Well, its all gone. I am amazed! I also get up the stairs easier than I used to. Yayy
USMC.CAR from E Cigarette forum:
I was smoking a pack and a half to two packs a day of True Menthol Kools just two days ago. This is amazing. I had no cravings at all and only smoked the cigarette because I was trying to do a taste comparison; The cigarette tasted horrible. Is it unusual for this to happen so quickly?
WillieB69 from E Cigarette forum:
Two weeks ago I was a 2 pack a day smoker. Today- None. Nada. Zip. Zero. Didn’t even want one. And that says a lot considering I just took a 3 hour final test for one of my online classes.
LifeJunkie from E Cigarette forum:
I’ll make it quick.
Both parents were lifetime smokers and both died of lung cancer in their 50s. I started smoking after school with “the cool kids” at age 14. I smoked 2 1/2 packs a day for 20+ years. Tried everything to quit blah, blah, blah…
I had resigned myself to the fact that smoking would take my life and there was nothing I could do about it. I woke up every morning reaching for the pack of cigarettes that I had grown to hate and spend my days either smoking or thinking about the next smoke. Smoking was more than a habit, it was part of my personality, it was my identity.
Heard about the e-cig, checked online, did some research, ordered a 510 kit. I didn’t really expect much, I was just hoping to use the e-cig to smoke in places where I wasn’t allowed to smoke.
The 510 showed up in my mailbox, I ripped open the package, put the thing together, and took my first drag. I swear, as the vapor hit my throat, I almost cried. I exhaled the vapor, relaxed and knew my life had changed forever. I haven’t smoked a cigarette since that moment. It’s been 8 days now and already, I can’t stand the smell of cigarette smoke. I can breathe again, my energy level is up, I feel good. I can make plans for the future instead of constantly thinking I’ll be dead before I reach 45. I can say without a doubt that Vaping saved my life.
I know that there are many of you out there that have had similar experiences but just know that this 1 mans life has changed. I am a different person than I was 2 weeks ago, I am a new man and its important. I am not trying to be dramatic but this is the best thing that has ever happened to me. Yes, I have a wife and now its possible that I won’t have to die on her at age 40-50. Yes I have children, maybe I can walk my daughter down the aisle. Maybe I can be there as my son starts his own family. So many maybes, so many possibilities, so many….. everything. This is everything to me.
Thank you to everybody that reads this, thank you so much. I don’t know who to thank for this wonderful gift, so I thank this community. Thank you.
MrsJaaxx from E Cigarette forum:
I have shared here about how my grandmother, at 75+ years of age, quit smoking the day we gave her an e-cig. This was in September (09), I think.
Now, she often goes for days without VAPING, either! She never made a decision to quit vaping, just some days she doesn’t even think about it. We are so proud of her!
What a strange journey….I’ve gone one year without a cigarette. This all coming from a “hard core” smoker knowing full well when i died, I’d have a cig in my hand.
metalrain from E Cigarette forum:
I purchased my first ecig (not with the intent of quitting) but something to use at work to get me to the next smoke break. Over a months time, i noticed i was smoking less, and vaping more. I basically was down to my bare minimum, must have, got no choice in the matter, “three cigarettes a day”….down from almost a 2 pack a day habit.
Seems the more i vaped, the less i wanted a cigarette. Understand, i did not put a whole lot of thought into the situation, it just happened….didn’t really know what happened till after it was over…. but, July 30th, 2009 i smoked my last cig…woke up August 1st for my morning cig, and decided to vape instead, telling myself i’ll just have my noon cig…noon come and gone, so i told myself i’d have my “before bed cig”….went to bed without a cig, but a vape instead…..leading up to this point in my life….no cigs, not even a puff for the last 12 months.
I was a die hard smoker….i probably still am….I took a hard look and figured out, if I have one cigarette, buy me a carton, because i don’t have the fortitude to stop after one smoke. For me, this is not a life long battle, the only battle i have to fight is lighting that first analog….I don’t have to say no to lots of cigs, just the first one.
How ironic, a die hard (ex) smoker 1 year later not even being able to imagine lighting up a cig…True story…I can’t even imagine myself ever smoking another cig…. Something happened….I wish i knew what it was. Good luck with your journey!!!
bonniegirl from E Cigarette forum:
I was a two pack a day smoker with a 35 year habit. I had 3 heart attacks and triple bypass surgery…not to mention 8 cardiac caths…some with stent placement and some revisions. The most relevant medical tests to ascertain whether the vaping has deleterious effects on the body is the pulmonary function study and a cbc. A smokers RBC size and hemoglobin carrying capacity are greatly affected due to the carbon monoxide from analogs. I have been for vaping about two years and completely off analogs 18 months. A week ago, I had my tests repeated and they were perfectly normal. My Doctor said I am now officially a non-smoker according to medical standards. It took a long time to achieve this. My blood pressure is normal and cholesterol and blood sugar are fine. Just an FYI for those with fears of PG and diabetes and VG for those who fear high cholesterol. I vape 3ml of 12 mg a day. I am one person….but there are many like me.
My conclusion as an RN and a vaper and a person who loved smoking enough to smoke in the ICU bathroom 24 hours after open heart surgery and dared the nurse to take the cigarette out of my hand and told security to arrest me and my chest tubes. I was as committed to smoking as I now am to vaping. sorry for the long post…just felt is was relevant to the OP and may give encouragement to those new to our vaping world. Hugs and smoke free

E-cigarette & Vaping Studies
Vaping Studies
Although the Canadian government has not bothered with its own toxicity studies, several Countries have done thorough research on both the physical results from e-cigarettes, nicotine levels in the body compared with tobacco cigarettes, and secondhand vapor results. Here are a collection of studies on e-smoking.
How safe are electronic cigarettes? Health New Zealand, April 8th, 2008. Ruyan is one of the largest producers of e-cigarettes in the world. In this health New Zealand study, they looked into the following items regarding the e-cigarette:
- Actual nicotine content compared to labeled nicotine content in cartridges – Results: The labeling is similar to actual nicotine content
- Risk of microorganisms in cartridge liquid – Results: No tendency for microorganisms to grow in the liquid
- Metals in liquid – Results: Metals all < 1 ppm: Not a risk
- HCN, Butadiene, and acrylonitrile toxicant – Results: < 0.3 PPM: Not a risk
- Contamination from mouthpiece – Results: Sharing the e-cigarette mouthpiece is inadvisable
- Safety of e-cigarette ‘vapor’ for bystanders – Results: No increase in Carbon Monoxide exhaled, not restricted by smoke-free laws in New Zealand. Does not product second hand smoke.
Safety Report on the Ruyan e-cigarette cartridge and inhaled aerosol? Health New Zealand, October, 2008. In this follow-up study by Health New Zealand, they looked at additional facts about the e-cigarette, going deeper into the inhalation and expulsion of the vapor created by the e-cigarette:
- The toxicity of inhaled Propylene glycol – Results: Inhalation toxicity is not an issue
- The levels of TSNA’s – Results: The E-cigarette cartridge does not contain carcinogenic levels of TSNA’s
- The levels of PAH’s – Results: The E-cigarette cartridge does not contain any levels of PAH’s
- The levels of Radioactivity – Results: No gamma-emitting nucleotides were found above the detection limit.
- Safety of e-cigarette ‘vapor’ for bystanders – Results: No increase in Carbon Monoxide exhaled, not restricted by smoke-free laws in New Zealand. Does not product secondhand smoke.
- Overall findings – All toxicant’s in the e-cigarette cartridge, are at levels below those determined to be harmful, as well as below the minimum risk levels accepted by the US public health service and SOHA. The results obtained to date do not mitigate this report’s overall concluding that the e-cigarette is designed to be a safe alternative to smoking, and appears to be safe in absolute terms on all measurements we have applied. Health Canada RE: E-cigarettes
Health Canada and the E-cigarette Dilemma
Regrettably, Health Canada has been somewhat reticent in providing comprehensive information about e-cigarettes and their usage among Canadians. Despite the growing popularity of these devices, Health Canada has yet to conduct any substantial testing or research on the topic.
The agency has issued a warning to Canadians, advising against the use of electronic cigarettes. The reason? Health Canada has not fully evaluated the safety, quality, and efficacy of these products, and they may pose health risks. The unfortunate reality is that Health Canada is shifting the burden of proof onto the manufacturers of e-cigarettes.
Health Canada grants market authorization following a successful review of scientific evidence demonstrating safety, quality, and efficacy with respect to the intended purpose of the health product, as outlined in Health Canada’s notice to e-cigarette sellers. This evidence must be provided by the sponsor seeking market authorization. However, as of now, no electronic smoking product has received authorization for sale by Health Canada.
The Catch-22 Situation
In essence, Health Canada acknowledges that they have not evaluated the safety of electronic cigarettes. Yet, they will not conduct tests on electronic cigarettes themselves, citing that these devices fall under the purview of the Food and Drugs Act. Thus, the responsibility lies with the manufacturers.
This creates a seemingly insurmountable hurdle for electronic cigarette manufacturers. The resources and capital required to conduct the testing and research that a foreign government demands are beyond their reach.
The Reality of E-cigarette Businesses
Contrary to what one might expect, all the businesses I have collaborated with to purchase electronic cigarettes and e-liquid have adhered to their own stringent government-regulated standards for the production and distribution of e-cigarettes. These regulations encompass UCS Quality Management systems, GMP Good manufacturing practice, Medical devices Quality management systems approval, CMDCAS ISO approval, KFDA certificate, and TUV-LFGB approval.
Health Canada’s Report: A Summary
Health Canada has issued a report directed at individuals who are using or considering using electronic cigarettes. It is crucial to remember that as a consumer, you have the right to make an informed decision about e-smoking. It is my goal to provide you with all the facts, both positive and negative.
Health Canada’s Advisory on Electronic Cigarettes
Date: March 27, 2009 Location: Ottawa
Health Canada has advised Canadians against purchasing or using electronic smoking products. These products, which include electronic cigarettes, cigars, cigarillos, and pipes, as well as cartridges of nicotine solutions and related products, may pose health risks. They have not been fully evaluated for safety, quality, and efficacy by Health Canada.
Currently, electronic smoking products are not compliant with the Food and Drugs Act as Health Canada has not granted them market authorization. Under the Food and Drugs Act, these products require market authorization before companies can import, advertise, or sell them.
In recent months, a variety of electronic cigarettes, cigars, pipes, and cartridges of nicotine solutions and related products have been marketed in Canada and online. Most of these products resemble their conventional counterparts in shape and appearance. They produce a vapor that mimics smoke and a glow that simulates the tip of a cigarette. They consist of a battery-powered delivery system that vaporizes and delivers a liquid chemical mixture, which may contain varying amounts of nicotine, propylene glycol, and other chemicals.
Nicotine is a highly addictive and toxic substance, and the inhalation of propylene glycol is a known irritant. Electronic smoking products may pose risks such as nicotine poisoning and addiction, despite being marketed as a safer alternative to conventional tobacco products and, in some cases, as an aid to quitting smoking. For further information about nicotine and addiction, please visit the Health Canada website.
While no electronic smoking product has yet been authorized for sale in Canada, Health Canada has authorized the sale of several smoking cessation aids, including nicotine gum, nicotine patches, nicotine inhalers, and nicotine lozenges.
Electronic smoking products, including their nicotine cartridges, must be kept out of the reach of children at all times due to the risk of choking or nicotine poisoning. Nicotine is hazardous to the health and safety of certain segments of the population. It Endangers children, youth, pregnant women, nursing mothers, people with heart conditions, and the elderly.
Persons importing, advertising, or selling electronic cigarette products in Canada must cease doing so immediately. Health Canada is providing information to interested stakeholders on how to apply for the appropriate market authorizations and establishment licenses.
Canadians who have used e-cigarette products and are concerned about their health should consult with a health care practitioner.
I suggest you now watch the following video from former US congressman Matt Salmon. It is directed to the FDA regarding e-cigarettes, but it very much applies to Health Canada as well.

Health Benefits of Vaping
Health Benefits: Vaping vs. Smoking
Health benefits of moving from traditional tobacco cigarettes to electronic cigarettes are subjective. The benefits are very similar to individuals who have quit smoking tobacco cigarettes entirely. Here are some general health benefits that I have found posted on e-cigarette forums and websites across the internet.
- Better Sleep
- Improved sense of smell and taste
- Reduced coughing and phlegm
- More energy and vitality
- Reduction in snoring
- Reduced pain in chest
- Improved mood and sense of well being
- Improved Vision
- Feeling of power and control
Here are just a few health benefits discussed by individuals who have successfully transitioned from tobacco cigarettes to e-cigarettes:
— BonnieGirl from E-Cigarette-Forum.com
I can run again. My wind is great. I can breathe without wheezing. I am dropping the extra weight while eating whatever I want (within my vegan reason). I go to school and know that once I am in the field, with my RN degree, I have a extra tool to help others. My mind is finally free to think about things other than cigarettes and how I shouldn’t and why I can’t and why I am — freedom. — glowgirl from E-Cigarette-Forum.com
overall we both feel better. he has stopped snoring every night. I have had migraines all my life and the last 2 years suddenly went for the worst by migraines happening nearly every day. they have severely decreased now, not a single migraine in almost 2 weeks now. — redfury from E-Cigarette-Forum.com
Here’s what I’ve gained:
- Much better peripheral circulation. Quitting analogs made me feel 10 years younger, easily.
- My sense of smell, while still not great, has vastly improved.
- My teeth are noticeably whiter.
- My gums are nice and pink, now.
- Most of all, I can exercise easily, now, without getting winded. Cutting the yard, or walking up, even very steep, long hills is a breeze. This took time, though. At 3 months in, I noticed a great improvement, but it’s trivial compared to now. I can say, without hesitation, that I’m in the best shape I’ve been, since my teen years.
- I only became aware in the last couple years of smoking just HOW BAD it smells. Thankfully, I don’t bear that social stigma anymore!
- My doc and dentist are happy with me.
- Money wise, I’m just starting to break even, but soon I’ll have more ready cash.
— Jherek from E-Cigarette-Forum.com
In less than a week, my smokers’ cough is all but gone. That’s something I definitely won’t miss! — firefox335 from E-Cigarette-Forum.com

Is vaping still cheaper than smoking in Canada?
A comprehensive breakdown of the cost of vaping vs. the cost of smoking in Canada
Welcome to our guide on vaping costs in Canada. In October of 2022, the Canadian government introduced a new excise tax for all Canadian vapors. This excise tax is similar to the current taxes implemented on tobacco, alcohol, and cannabis products. If you have ever purchased any of these products you will see an excise tax stamp that is applied to these products.
The tax applies to all e-liquids, including e-liquid bottles, pre-filled pods, and pre-filled disposable vapes.
The tax is applied on a ‘per milliliter’ basis, with the first 10ml of e-liquid in a product being the highest tax, and then the tax lowering for e-liquid larger than 10ml. The tax works out to $1 per 2ml for the first 10ml, and then $1 per 10ml thereafter.
The question we get again and again at Canada Vapes is this: With the new vaping excise tax, does vaping still remain a less expensive (cheaper) option than smoking cigarettes?
The short answer is. Yes, without question, vaping is cheaper than smoking in Canada.
The detailed answer is broken down below:
Cost of smoking cigarettes in Canada as of October 2022
In 2022, the average price for a pack of cigarettes in Canada is $13.91. Calculated over the course of a year, assuming a pack a day smoker, the cost to smoke cigarettes in Canada works out to: $5,077.15 per year. Just over Five thousand dollars per year to smoke a pack of cigarettes a day in Canada.
While the cost varies from province to province, even at the cheapest provincial price in Canada – Quebec, the cost of a carton of cigarettes in Quebec is $96.36 or $12.04 per pack. This still equates to $4394.60 per year. The most expensive province to smoke – Manitoba – has an average carton price of $139.83, or $17.48 per pack. This equates to $6379.74 per year to smoke a pack a day in Manitoba.
So the cost of smoking cigarettes in Canada (one pack a day) can be between approximately $4,400 and $6,400 per year.
Vaping Costs in Canada as of October 2022
Vaping now has several different options. To be most accurate, I will break down the cost into three categories – Disposable vapes, disposable pods, and traditional e-liquid vaping.
Disposable vaping
Disposable vapes are ‘one time use’ vapes. These vapes have a built in battery and come prefilled with e-liquid. Once the e-liquid runs out, or the battery does (hopefully at the same time) the product is ‘dead’ and must be replaced by a new disposable vape. I’ll consider a disposable vape as anything that cannot be recharged.
These vapes run between $13.99 – $21.99 depending on how many ‘puffs’ they estimate per product. The excise tax on these products will range between $2 and $5 depending on size. To get to an average and not get too bogged down on the numbers, we have found the average size’ disposable vape pen lasts 1600 puffs, and costs $19.49. These devices last our customers an average of 4 days, meaning the cost per day to use a disposable device is $4.87 per day. Calculated for a full year, the average cost of vaping a disposable is $1178.46 per year. This is 65% less than smoking cigarettes, or over nearly a third the cost of smoking cigarettes. And it is the most expensive vaping option available.
Pod Systems
Pod systems have gained popularity over the past 4-5 years as they have become available in many convenience stores and gas stations. They are super simple to use, and when your pod runs out, you just pop a new pre-filled pod into the top of your vape. Examples of pod systems include the Allo Sync, and the Stlth Device. Both of these systems have rechargeable batteries and replaceable pre-filled ‘pods’. These pods typically hold 2ml of e-liquid, last most of our customers one day.
To use a pod system, you need to make a one time purchase of a vape pen ($14.99-$19.99) and then purchase individual pre-filled pods. Let’s assume that the average vape pen lasts you approximately 3 months, so the daily cost of the vape pen is 0.8 cents.
These pods typically come in a 3 pack and are $17.99. This works out to a daily average cost of $6 per day, plus 8 cents for the vape pen. Calculated for a full year, the average cost of vaping a pod system is $2219.20. This works out to being 56.3% cheaper then smoking cigarettes.
Traditional e-liquid
We sell our e-liquid in 60ml and 120ml bottles. Based on the excise taxes, the larger the bottle size, the less tax you will pay. 120ml bottles are the most popular bottle size, so for this example, I will use the 120ml bottle size.To vape traditionally, you will need a Vaping starter kit that comes with a tank that is filled up manually using our e-liquid. The prices of these starter kits can vary between $24.99 all the way to $89.99. These systems typically have a coil that needs to be replaced every once in a while. On average, our customers will use two coils per month. Also on average, our customers will vape approximately 5ml of e-liquid per month.
Breaking down this cost is a bit more complicated, but I’ll take it slow.
E-Liquid
At $65.99 for a 120ml bottle of e-liquid, based on 5ml use per day, the average daily price of e-liquid is: $2.75 per day.
Starter Kit
Prices vary, but let’s take the average of $60 for a starter kit. Based on one year’s use per starter kit, the daily average cost of a starter kit is 0.16 per day.
Coils
On average, our customers use two coils per month. The average price of a single coil is $3.60, so based on using two coils per month, the daily average cost of coils is $0.24 per day.
Adding all of this up – the daily average cost of vaping using traditional e-liquid is: $3.15. This works out to a great value $1149.75 per year. This works out to being 78% less expensive than smoking cigarettes and will save you just shy of $4,000 every year compared with smoking cigarettes.
Vaping Style Cost per day Cost per year Annual savings vs. Cigarettes Disposables $4.87 $1777.55 $3299.60 Disposable Pod Systems $6.08 $2219.20 $2857.95 E-Liquid $3.15 $1149.75 $3927.40 In conclusion
No matter what manner you choose, vaping was and still remains much cheaper than smoking in Canada. Switching from smoking to vaping will save you between $2800-$3900 every year. Over a 10 year span, this savings will be an average of over $30,000 in savings. Think of what you can do with $30,000 extra in your bank in ten years!
The most cost effective vaping method is to purchase a larger and more durable starter kit and fill up the tank yourself with 120ml e-liquid bottles. This method saves you nearly 80% vs. smoking. Even the pre-filled pod systems and disposables will all end up being less than half the cost of cigarette smoking, so no matter how you slice it, vaping is still much cheaper then smoking.
Not only that, but you also won’t be stinking like cigarettes, or putting nearly 2000 cancer-causing chemicals into your body. The results are overwhelming, vaping remains much cheaper than smoking in Canada.

Study Confirms Vaping Far Less Toxic Than Smoking
A replication study of an experiment on vaping vs smoking has demonstrated that vaping is far less toxic than tobacco cigarettes.
The study was overseen by the Center of Excellence for the acceleration of Harm Reduction of the University of Catania or CoEHAR and carried out by 5 separate university research teams. It was part of the “Replica Project” which looks to replicate previous studies conducted in the tobacco product industry in a high quality mannar.
A large reason for this replication study was that many of the studies done in this field have been conducted by the tobacco industry and would therefore constitute a conflict of interest. Since many of the studies have not been replicated or properly reviewed, the quality of the experiment and findings can be called into question. This study was aimed at making improvements in the research methodology, to try and bring a larger degree of reliability in the data and results.
In order to reduce bias and increase the reliability in the results, CoEHAR standardized or eliminated many of the variable factors in the original study. Some of the variables that were affected by this were nicotine levels, frequency of use, the analysis of the same cells in the throat, and participant history. Many previous findings used participants who were former smokers and would therefore have skewed health data in terms of their toxicity levels. The researchers decided to replicate the study using a method that is called “neutral red uptake”. Neutral red uptake is the standardized method used by the industry and is advised by the FDA and the European Commission in order to provide a toxicity profile update.
The largest factor in causing harm with tobacco-related products are the combustible products rather than the nicotine itself. The combustible products in traditional cigarettes expose people to over 400 different toxic compounds such as free radicals, nitrates and carbonyls. Vaping nicotine rather than smoking a cigarette eliminates these compounds from the equation, leading to far less harm on the user.
Part of the problem with previous studies and data is that some of it has been misleading or made to look inconclusive. While there is little to no one who would argue that nicotine use or vaping products are risk-free or harmless, the actual debate is whether it is more or less harmful than traditional smoking. Over five million people a year die because of tobacco-related products, a number that could potentially be reduced with less harmful alternatives. When polled, 90% of current smokers would switch to a less harmful product if they believed it to be safer. To quote CoEHAR Director Professor Giovanni Li Volti “If you are obese, your doctor will tell you to go on a diet. If you have high glycemia because you are diabetic, your doctor will give you insulin. If you are addicted to heroin, they might give you methadone – they switch you to a less harmful product. But if you smoke, they just tell you to quit smoking, like it’s very easy – but it’s not.”. It was found that only about 15% of people are able to just quit smoking, leaving 85% of people to potentially develop lung cancer or cardiovascular disease.
A criticism of previous data in this field is surrounding the long-term effects of vaping. In the past, it was argued that since vaping was still fairly new, no long-term studies could be conducted and would therefore have inconclusive results. Vaping has now been around for over a decade, allowing long-term studies to be carried out and investigated. In previous studies many of the subjects were previous smokers who had smoked for over 20 years, making it hard to determine if the toxicity was caused by their years of smoking or directly from vaping. We now have data from subjects who never smoked but have been exclusively vaping. This makes the data much more reliable since it will include much fewer variables.
The original study found that vaping was 95% less toxic than traditional smoking. The new study (using 5 separate measures in order to reduce variability) found that this was in fact true.
While it is still difficult to find research or articles in this area that is free from bias, the data within the studies and methodologies used can lend a large amount of credibility. It is always important to consider the source of funding, the organization conducting the study, as well as the quality of the actual experiment when reading about this topic. We at Canada Vapes strive to improve the lives of our customers and reduce the overall harm of smoking through our product offerings or with up-to-date scientific information. To once again quote Professor Giovanni Li Volti “Don’t forget there’s a huge percentage of people who are still smoking who would switch if they were correctly informed – so we have to reach those people. If we can, we have a 90% chance of reducing their chances of getting chronic diseases.”
Hopefully, this post has been helpful in informing you about vaping vs smoking and in potentially making the transition away from cigarettes. A link to the study is included below should you wish to read further.
