    My Journey – Testimonial:

My name is Howie, and I started CanadaVapes.com in September of 2010. I am 38 years old and the father of two beautiful children, Joel who is 10, and Sophia is nearly 7.  I would like to take this opportunity to tell you my personal e-cigarette story.

Cigarettes had an allure, I started smoking cigarettes early in high school, as a way to rebel and gain independence. Back in the late 80’s, there wasn’t nearly as much negativity towards tobacco as there is today, and therefore it wasn’t considered a ‘big deal’ for me to smoke. In fact, there were still smoking patios at the high schools where kids went for their cigarette breaks! I enjoyed smoking very much, and had no thoughts of quitting throughout my teenage years and into my early twenties. I was not experiencing any negative effects of smoking, and still remained active in sports.

    Health effects start kicking in

It was in my mid twenties when I really started thinking about quitting smoking. I had heard all of the data on smoking and cancer, emphysema, etc, and as the warnings on the cigarette packs grew, so did the negative stigma surrounding cigarettes. With more and more places going smoke free – restaurants, malls, and even bars – I wanted to be free from the burden of going outside every hour for my fix. I still enjoyed cigarettes, but was now starting to wake up on occasion with a sore throat, and cough little yummy yellow phlegm in the mornings.

Quitting is tough, I tried to quit cold turkey a number of times throughout my 20’s, but was never successful for more than a few days. I tried the patch, which made me itchy and moody, but didn’t work at all. I lasted one day and all I could think about was a cigarette. Determined to quit, I tried nicotine gum, which tasted terrible, gave me heartburn, and lasted me about 2 days before returning to cigarettes. The price of smoking had been going up since I started, from just $2.50 a pack to $6-$7 a pack, and it seemed every few months the government was issuing some additional surcharge on cigarettes just to drive the price up more.

    Trying out prescription products?

I finally tried Zyban, a prescription drug that had a slightly higher success rate then patches or gums. I lasted a long time with the Zyban, going several months without a cigarette. The only problem was that the drug was causing me to not be able to eat –not a bad thing as I could lose a few pounds — but I literately would go into a restaurant starving, take two bites of my food, and feel sick to my stomach. I had to stop Zyban, but I actually started smoking a pipe for several months before eventually returning to cigarettes.

When I entered my thirties, I could really start to feel the effects of fifteen years of smoking on my body. I would wake up every morning with a buildup of phlegm that would need to be coughed up before I could start my day. Most evenings I would get a tightening in my chest, and a sharp pinch when I inhaled deeply. I was easily winded, often needing to catch my breath just walking up from my basement to my kitchen. I had an aggressive smokers cough that made me sound like I had bronchitis all the time. Cigarettes are hard on my wallet, I was also spending nearly $10 per pack of cigarettes, and smoking around a pack a day. I felt I just had to find a way to stop smoking before it was too late.

    E-Cigarettes were my answer!

In late 2009 I saw an ad for an electronic cigarette on a website. I had seen e-cigarettes before a few years back, but the kits were several hundred dollars, which I just couldn’t justify spending at the time. I did some research, and found someone selling e-cigarettes in my town locally, and picked up my very first Beginners Starter Kit. Unlike some people’s success stories, my moving from traditional tobacco smoking to e-cigarettes was not an instant or immediate result. I continued to smoke, but would vape as well. I slowly (and unconsciously) over the next few weeks started vaping more often, and smoking cigarettes less. Being the winter, I would often find myself sitting in my den, having my e-smoke, and thinking how cold it was outside. I would notice a longer and longer time between cigarettes as I started to vape more.

One day, about two weeks after getting my Starter Kit a strange thing started happening. I actually started preferring the taste and feeling of vaping, over my cigarettes. I actually started disliking the taste in my mouth when I had a cigarette. When I woke up in the morning, reaching for my e-cigarette was the first thing on my mind, instead of going out for my morning cigarette. I decided about three weeks after getting my e-cigarette that the next day, when I woke up, I was simply going to go as long as I could without a cigarette, using only my e-cigarette. Well, I lasted through the day without any problems, and the next day the same thing, and the next.

Freedom from the smell of cigarettes

After just a few days being cigarette free, I really started noticing the terrible smell of cigarettes when I would be with someone who was smoking. My jacket still smelled like old cigarettes, so I washed everything I had. I found I could wash my hands in the morning, and they would smell like soap for hours! I would put on cologne, and I could smell it all day. The first physical thing I noticed was that I was coughing less and less throughout the day and that the pinching feeling in my lungs had stopped. I still got out of breath fairly easily, but could definitely feel an improvement in my breathing and lungs. I found I slept better, and overall just felt so incredibly free all the time. No longer needing to don a big coat and step outside into the Canadian winter to get my puff on.

    Vape anywhere

I could vape anywhere. I remember going to my parent’s house on a Sunday for lunch and pulling out my e-cigarette, and puffing a big vape. My mom’s jaw dropped. After explaining to her how it works, she was very excited and supportive of it. Of everyone in my life, my mother was always the one nagging me to quit. Her father passed away from lung cancer when I was just a little boy, and she had always hated cigarettes and smoking.

It has now been over six years smoke-free, and I have absolutely no desire to smoke traditional cigarettes. I am so happy to be free from the burden of cigarettes in my life. Not having to have smoke breaks every hour, and not walking around stinking all day has been a huge plus for me. Feeling more energy and vitality as my body continues to heal itself from years of abuse. Words just can’t describe the appreciation I have for e-cigarettes, nor how incredibly happy I am that I found them.

  • Increase in youth vaping, I know why!

Increase in youth vaping, I know why!

    *HINT: It’s not the flavours*

Youths are using ultra-high nicotine vapes to get high.

Contrary to popular belief, the surge in youth vaping is not solely due to appealing flavors. Instead, it’s driven by the availability of ultra-high nicotine vapes catering to getting high.

    Understanding the Shift:

While electronic cigarettes and vaping products have been in the market for about 15 years, the recent spike in youth vaping demands scrutiny into what changed during this period.

    The Rise of Nicotine Salts:

A pivotal shift occurred with the introduction of nicotine salts, accompanied by the emergence of pre-filled pod systems, which gained traction among youth vapers. Nicotine manufacturers managed to minimize throat discomfort associated with vaping high-nicotine e-liquids through chemical processes.

    The JUUL Impact:

JUUL, a prominent player, capitalized on this trend by offering e-liquids with unprecedentedly high nicotine concentrations. Prior to 2016, commercially available nicotine levels peaked at 24mg. With nicotine salts, JUUL pushed boundaries, offering pods containing up to 60mg of nicotine, nearly triple the previous maximum.

    The Craving for Highs:

Surprisingly, the most sought-after nicotine strength in many markets is a mere 3mg, contrasting sharply with the excessively high levels found in some commercial vaping products. Over 95% of our sales consist of liquids with nicotine levels of 16mg or below. Such high nicotine concentrations, especially in JUUL pods, can induce a euphoric high akin to smoking marijuana, particularly among non-smokers.

    The Misuse Dilemma:

Numerous conversations with teenagers aged 14 to 18 revealed a disturbing trend: vaping at parties for the sole purpose of getting high. This misuse parallels activities like huffing paint thinner or abusing prescription drugs for recreational purposes, deviating significantly from the intended use of vaping products.

    Recommendations for Regulation:

To address this concerning trend, stringent regulations on nicotine levels are imperative. I propose limiting nicotine levels in vaping products to ensure efficacy for smokers transitioning to vaping while mitigating the risk of intoxication. A maximum nicotine level of 20mg is recommended to strike this balance effectively.

    Our Commitment at Canada Vapes:

At Canada Vapes, we’ve taken proactive steps to address this issue by capping our e-liquid nicotine levels at 24mg and nicotine salt levels at 36mg/ml. We’re actively considering further reductions to 20mg/ml across all our e-liquids. It’s crucial for other manufacturers in the youth vaping market to follow suit, contributing to the collective effort to curb youth vaping in Canada.

This proactive approach underscores our commitment to responsible vaping practices and the well-being of our customers.

Youth-Friendly Sour Key Pop Rock Candy Vodka Drink! Palasad Targeting Youth?

Over the past several months, the vaping world has been attacked by both our media and our government. Allegations about vaping companies have been strong and bold, suggesting that vaping companies are targeting youth in an attempt to get them hooked on nicotine at an early age. The media and our government have been suggesting that the reason e-liquids and vaping products contain flavours such as strawberry, bubblegum, chocolate, and the like is to intentionally attract young people to vaping.

  • Should we ban ground beef? Pet turtles? Don’t ban vaping – Salmonella is killing Americans!

Should we ban ground beef? Pet turtles? Don’t ban vaping – Salmonella is killing Americans!

From the mind (and mouth) of Howie – Founder of CanadaVapes.com – Canada’s First (and subjectively best) Vape Shop since 2010.

    The Controversy Surrounding Vaping Bans

In recent months, the discussion around banning vaping has reached a fever pitch. Several states have outright banned all vaping devices, regardless of whether they’re being used as a smoking cessation device or bought off the street. The outcry from government heads has been to ban it all.

    The Impact of Smoking

It’s important to remember that smoking cigarettes is the #1 preventable killer of Americans. Around the world, smoking claims the lives of 8,000,000 people each year. (SOURCE) Vaping has been extensively studied and found to be 95%+ safer than smoking (SOURCE). Yet, in the face of fear and panic, the knee-jerk reaction has been to ban it.

    Comparing Risks: Salmonella vs. Vaping

By comparison, Salmonella kills an estimated 420 Americans every single year. That’s 1.2 Americans every day, dead from eating ground beef or playing with their pet turtle and not washing their hands. Salmonella causes 1.35 million illnesses and results in over 26,000 hospitalizations each year (SOURCE). So, where is the outcry to ban ground beef or other potential sources of Salmonella?

Here is a list of the ingredients of our e-liquids at Canada Vapes.    There are four ingredients only.  There is no reason for nicotine e-liquids to contain this product.  If they did, this situation would have arisen over 10 years ago when vaping started getting popular.  Some unregulated THC vape pod manufacturers have been using it in their products recently as a thickening or thinning agent. (SOURCE)

The Real Culprit: THC Infused Vaping Pods

THC infused vaping pods have been found to be the primary culprit of Vaping Related Illness, and the CDC has claimed Vitamin E Acetate as the major contributor to the vaping related illnesses across the US (SOURCE). Vape e-liquids with nicotine do not contain Vitamin E Acetate.

    The Role of Regulation

In Canada, where marijuana is legal and therefore regulated, Health Canada has stated that marijuana pods and vape pens sold in Canada do not contain Vitamin E Acetate, never have and never will. This highlights the importance of regulation in ensuring the safety of consumers.

    The Bottom Line

At the end of the day, nothing is completely safe. However, the risks associated with various activities need to be compared and understood. For those who are smoking cigarettes and cannot quit, vaping could be a safer alternative.

Even if you are a non-smoker and non-vaper, the fact that the US government is so quick to shout out “Ban!” whenever something happens that brings them fear, is a dangerous environment to live in. One day your government may ban or make illegal something you want or need, so take concern about this situation.

    Peace & Love,

    Howie
