With the new tax, is vaping still cheaper than smoking?
With the provincial vape tax coming into effect OCT 1, 2024 some of our customers are asking if it may be cheaper to go back to cigarettes.
Beyond the obvious answer of – don’t do this for your health, I’ll do some number crunching below. You will find that vaping is still quite a bit less expensive than smoking, even after the tax.
I’ll also provide some smart suggestions to make your vape dollars go further.
Assuming a pack a day smoker, cigarettes in Canada average $16.50 per pack. Premium brands can be well over $20 per pack in some provinces, but let’s just take the average $16.50 for comparison.
This works out to $495 every 30 days, or $5940 a year to smoke a pack of cigarettes a day in Canada.
The average customer vapes approximately 5ml of e-liquid per day. Some as little as 2-3ml, and others as high as 8-10ml, but for this article, let’s stick with the average.
A 120ml e-liquid bottle will cost $70. Since we offer free shipping on all orders over $50, you won’t pay a penny for shipping at Canada Vapes. This equates to 24 days of vaping for $70, or $2.92 a day for vaping. Even if you double or even triple your e-liquid use, it is still much much cheaper to vape than smoking (cough) cigarettes.
Adding the price of new supplies (batteries, kits, coils, etc.) that you may use, our average customer spends about $200 per year on these accessories, or about 0.58c per day.
So by comparison, smoking will cost you $16.50 a day, and vaping just $3.47, about 80% less than smoking!
VAPING IS STILL 79% CHEAPER THEN SMOKING!
Tips to stretch out your vape dollars:
Don’t use disposables as your main vape:
I get it – disposables are easy, quick and consistent. But long term, they will cost you much more than using a kit that you fill up with e-liquid yourself. A disposable vape with about 10ml of e-liquid will run you $20-$25, which is about 4-5x more than buying the e-liquid separately, which costs $5.83 for 10ml.
Vaping with Canada Vapes E-liquid and Kits will always be cheaper than pre-filled pods or disposable vapes – a lot cheaper!
We offer e-liquid in FreeBase, Nic Salts and High VG so no matter what your vaping needs are, we have you covered! We have over 100 unique flavors and many nicotine strength options to take advantage of..
Buy your e-liquid in larger bottles.
Bigger bottles save money – 120ml bottles are about 18% savings vs. 60ml bottles, and they often go on sale, so you can save even more.
Lower your vape wattage for longer lasting e-liquid
Coils and pods with higher wattages reduce how much liquid you will use, and will make your e-liquid last much longer. Consider the Smok Nord 5 pod system, kits or the Caliburn G2 kits that work best with our freebase e-liquid (add links)
Keep your eye out for our monthly promotions!
Make sure you are on our mailing list (add link to mailing list) as we regularly discount our e-liquid through monthly promotions.
Check out the Clearance Section – we often have discounted slower selling e-liquids in our clearance section for up to 50% off!

International Study Debunks Vaping-to-Smoking Myth
An international study completed by Queen Mary University in London discovered that vaping does not lead to smoking cigarettes. There have been many myths abound about the link between vaping and smoking.
It has been a long-standing belief that vaping could act as a gateway to traditional cigarette smoking. Researchers discovered that there is no sign e-cigarettes promote or cause cigarette smoking.
“There is no sign of that, and there are some signs that they, in fact, compete against cigarettes”, states Professor Peter Hajek, Director of the Health and Lifestyle Research Unit at Queen Mary University.
“The results of this study alleviate the concern that access to e-cigarettes and other low-risk nicotine products promotes smoking.”, Hajek states, emphasizing the study’s findings.
Joey Dulay, president of the Philippine E-Cigarette Industry Association, also weighed in on the findings. “Among our peers, I have not seen any vaper turn into a smoker. It is either they continue to use e-cigarettes or quit altogether. In fact, I know a lot of former smokers who are now using e-cigarettes, which are far less harmful than combustible tobacco”.
The link between vaping and smoking: The Study
The comprehensive and in-depth study encompassed multiple countries in order to conclude its findings. Rather than encourage cigarette use, vaping seems to be causing a decline in it.
When comparing smoking rates between countries with differing e-cigarette regulations, the findings were striking.
Countries like Australia, where e-cigarette sales are banned, experienced a gradual decline in smoking. Meanwhile, in areas like the U.K. and the U.S., where e-cigarettes are more accessible, show a faster decline.
The study also examined countries where other smoking/e-cigarette alternatives are most popular, such as Sweden, where oral nicotine pouches are the delivery of choice. Japan and South Korea are also studied, where it’s common to heat tobacco rather than burn it.
While the promising study by the British university captivates attention, additional research on the link between vaping and smoking remains necessary. In the future they may be able to confirm the findings, as well as expand on the long term effects of vaping and other nicotine delivery products.
Professor Brian Ferguson, Director of the Public Health Research Programme (NIHR), shared his concluding thoughts on the researcher’s information.
“The initial findings from this study are valuable, but no firm conclusions can be drawn yet. More research is needed in this area to understand further the impact that alternative nicotine delivery products, such as e-cigarettes, might have on smoking rates,” he explained.
Many countries have opposing views and laws on e-cigarettes and smoking. It’s hard to say what will come for the future. However, it is certainly reassuring to have some light shed on current events. This news supports a favourable outlook on the future for nicotine users worldwide.

Vape bans could have disastrous consequences – undoing gains in smoking cessation – expert warns
“It is like everyone has forgotten about smoking, which will kill over 100 Canadians today,” he said.
David Sweanor, Professor in the Center for Health Law, Policy and Ethics at the University of Ottawa said bans and restrictions on vaping could drive more people to smoke. This could undo years of work the public health has been doing to reduce cigarette smoking in Canada.
In Canada, approximately 17% of deaths are due to smoking; 20% in males, and in 12% in females. This is OVERALL DEATHS IN CANADA. This equates to nearly 4,000 Canadians each year that die due to smoking cigarettes, cigars, and pipes. Secondhand smoke accounts for 831 deaths in 2002, and almost 100 infant deaths were a result of smoking. It is estimated that the average life expectancy in a smoking male goes from 78 years to 71 years, and from 83 years to 73 years in females (Source).
Sweanor states (correctly) that the majority of the cases being investigated by the CDC in the US are NOT CONNECTED with nicotine-based vaping products, but rather connected to THC . It is his recommendation to warn the population against THC-infused oils and not issue a blanket warning against all vaping.
“This is hugely counterproductive,” Sweanor states regarding the panic around vaping. Public Health Officials see the value of vaping nicotine as a harm reduction for adult smokers. “We have the potential to get rid of the leading cause of preventable death. What is killing people is the smoke, not the nicotine,” Sweanor continues.
Sweanor goes on to say, “Just Say No Campaigns around vaping will have the unintended consequences of pushing people towards cigarettes”. There are many cases in recent weeks seeing vapers moving back to smoking due to this ill-advised blanket warning from both Health Canada and The Center for Diseases Control. “Just Say No Campaigns do not meet those criteria, particularly so when dealing with addictions, and dramatically so when the foreseeable consequences is the resumption of a massively more hazardous behavior like cigarette smoking.”
Speaking on behalf of Canada Vapes, there is a great deal of fear within our customer base, with racy headlines about ‘vaping related deaths’, and friends and families switching from being proud of them for quitting smoking to suggesting they are killing themselves and to go back to smoking! Outrageous! Preposterous! …but sadly true.
Howie from Canada Vapes states : “We have been selling Vape products since 2010, and the vaping industry has been around for over 15 years. In our history, there have been zero episodes of significant harmful reactions from any of our over 100,000 Canadian customers. Clearly there is a new and unsafe product in the market that needs to be called out by name. Fortunately places like the Rolling Stone Magazine, Leafy.com, and The New York Times are starting to get the truth into the market. Hopefully its not too late. Hopefully ex-smokers will not return to the terrible cigarettes. Hopefully soon our own government health regulators will start to reveal the truth to their citizens.”

Electronic Cigarettes Help You Quit Smoking – New Study Reveals
Electronic Cigarettes will help you quit smoking says a new study.
A new study of almost 6,000 smokers over five years has shown that the use of electronic cigarettes will help you quit smoking. Smokers are 60 percent more likely to successfully quit smoking if they use electronic cigarettes vs. other nicotine products such as patches and gums, or cold turkey.
This finding shows that electronic cigarettes will reduce tobacco-related deaths and illnesses dramatically when used by cigarette smokers looking to stop the tobacco habit. The use of electronic cigarettes will reduce lung cancer and other chronic respiratory diseases, and will reduce cardiovascular diseases, which are the number one killer in the world. People who quit smoking will reduce their chances of cardiovascular disease in half within one year of quitting smoking. Within five years of quitting smoking, the risk of cancer of the mouth, throat, and bladder. Within 2-5 years of quitting smoking, the risk of stroke is reduced to that of a non-smoker.
Robert West of University College London’s epidemiology and public health department stated: “E-cigarettes could substantially improve public health because of their widespread appeal and the huge health gains associated with stopping smoking,” It was Robert who leads this study.
This huge 5-year study surveyed 5,863 smokers between 2009 and 2014 who have tried to quit smoking. Of those smokers, 20% successfully quit smoking with the aid of e-cigarettes compared with 10.1% of those using traditional nicotine replacements such as patches and gums.
Those against electronic cigarettes point to a lack of long-term scientific evidence to show the safety of these devices, and also worry that e-cigarette use will become a more accepted practice, after spending many years reducing the use of traditional tobacco cigarettes. West agreed that the long-term results are not there, however, urges people to weigh them against the strong evidence we have on the harmful effects of tobacco smoke. He stated: “It’s not clear whether long-term use of e-cigarettes carries health risks, but from what is known about the contents of the vapour these will be much less than from smoking”.
Tobacco smoking kills half of the people who do it, and kills an estimated six million people each year, according to the World Health Organization.
