With the new tax, is vaping still cheaper than smoking?
With the provincial vape tax coming into effect OCT 1, 2024 some of our customers are asking if it may be cheaper to go back to cigarettes.
Beyond the obvious answer of – don’t do this for your health, I’ll do some number crunching below. You will find that vaping is still quite a bit less expensive than smoking, even after the tax.
I’ll also provide some smart suggestions to make your vape dollars go further.
Assuming a pack a day smoker, cigarettes in Canada average $16.50 per pack. Premium brands can be well over $20 per pack in some provinces, but let’s just take the average $16.50 for comparison.
This works out to $495 every 30 days, or $5940 a year to smoke a pack of cigarettes a day in Canada.
The average customer vapes approximately 5ml of e-liquid per day. Some as little as 2-3ml, and others as high as 8-10ml, but for this article, let’s stick with the average.
A 120ml e-liquid bottle will cost $70. Since we offer free shipping on all orders over $50, you won’t pay a penny for shipping at Canada Vapes. This equates to 24 days of vaping for $70, or $2.92 a day for vaping. Even if you double or even triple your e-liquid use, it is still much much cheaper to vape than smoking (cough) cigarettes.
Adding the price of new supplies (batteries, kits, coils, etc.) that you may use, our average customer spends about $200 per year on these accessories, or about 0.58c per day.
So by comparison, smoking will cost you $16.50 a day, and vaping just $3.47, about 80% less than smoking!
VAPING IS STILL 79% CHEAPER THEN SMOKING!
Tips to stretch out your vape dollars:
Don’t use disposables as your main vape:
I get it – disposables are easy, quick and consistent. But long term, they will cost you much more than using a kit that you fill up with e-liquid yourself. A disposable vape with about 10ml of e-liquid will run you $20-$25, which is about 4-5x more than buying the e-liquid separately, which costs $5.83 for 10ml.
Vaping with Canada Vapes E-liquid and Kits will always be cheaper than pre-filled pods or disposable vapes – a lot cheaper!
We offer e-liquid in FreeBase, Nic Salts and High VG so no matter what your vaping needs are, we have you covered! We have over 100 unique flavors and many nicotine strength options to take advantage of..
Buy your e-liquid in larger bottles.
Bigger bottles save money – 120ml bottles are about 18% savings vs. 60ml bottles, and they often go on sale, so you can save even more.
Lower your vape wattage for longer lasting e-liquid
Coils and pods with higher wattages reduce how much liquid you will use, and will make your e-liquid last much longer. Consider the Smok Nord 5 pod system, kits or the Caliburn G2 kits that work best with our freebase e-liquid (add links)
Keep your eye out for our monthly promotions!
Make sure you are on our mailing list (add link to mailing list) as we regularly discount our e-liquid through monthly promotions.
Check out the Clearance Section – we often have discounted slower selling e-liquids in our clearance section for up to 50% off!

Quebec Vape Flavour Ban – Q&A
What is the Quebec flavour ban?
As of October 31st 2023, the province of Quebec has banned the sale of any flavoured vaping/nicotine products and e-liquids. The only “flavours” allowed to be sold are flavourless liquids and tobaccos. Fruit, mints and others will not be available to purchase under this Quebec flavour ban.
Why did Quebec create this law?
The Quebec government claims the flavour ban protects the underage youth from starting to vape by making it less attractive. The belief that flavored e-liquid attracts young people and that making it harder to purchase will result in fewer young vapers informed the design of the regulations. The goal is to prevent minors from being able to access vaping products and becoming dependent on nicotine.
How does the Quebec Flavour Ban impact adult vapers seeking alternatives to traditional tobacco products?
The Quebec Flavour Ban directly affects adult vapers by limiting their choices to only flavourless liquids and tobacco. This restriction raises concerns among those who use vaping as a smoking alternative, as the ban eliminates various flavour options that may contribute to the success of smoking cessation efforts.
What else is prohibited?
In addition to the erasure of flavoured e-liquid, Quebec now only allows the sale of tanks that are 2ml, and has regulated the appearance of vaping products in advertising as an attempt to make it less attractive. Furthermore, there is a limitation on the maximum nicotine concentration to 20mg.
Can I still order online to Quebec from Canada Vapes?
Yes. The ban contributes only to the sale of flavoured vaping products in the province of Quebec. You can still order online from other places and have it shipped to you.
In response to the Quebec Flavour Ban, adult vapers may find themselves in a challenging position. Vapers may be grappling with reduced options for flavors that contribute to their overall vaping experience. This regulatory shift not only impacts personal preferences but also raises questions about the effectiveness of vaping as a smoking cessation tool in the absence of diverse flavor choices. As the vaping landscape undergoes transformation in Quebec, individuals navigating these changes may seek alternative strategies to maintain their commitment to a smoke-free lifestyle. It becomes imperative for both users and industry stakeholders to stay informed and adapt to the evolving regulatory framework, fostering a comprehensive understanding of the nuanced dynamics surrounding vaping in the province.

Big Vape: New Netflix Documentary on Juul Tells a Controversial Story
“Big Vape: The Rise and Fall of Juul” delves into the dramatic trajectory of the Juul vaping device, chronicling its meteoric rise and eventual downfall.
A 4 part docu-series is premiering on Netflix, on October 11. The docu-series will be depicting the drastic rise and fall of the infamous vaping device, the Juul.
It’s called “Big Vape: The Rise and Fall of Juul”, and the title speaks for itself. Juul was a 38 billion dollar company, popular among teens and young adults in their 20s. Juul had the upper hand in the vaping world for years. With ads in Seventeen magazine, the Nick Jr. TV Channel and several other sites directed mainly to teens, they were impossible to miss.
However all of that changed drastically in 2018. An investigation by the FDA forced Juul to discontinue some flavours of their cartridges, due to the concern of attracting minors to vaping. In 2019, they reached an agreement with the Center for Environmental Health to ease up on their marketing. As a result, by 2020, Juul’s market share fell to 42%, and by 2022, they were pulled from shelves completely.
In just 4 years, Juul went from being the most ubiquitous vaping product, to becoming virtually non-existent.
How did Juul’s rise begin?
The series begins with the story of Stanford tech bros Adam Bowen and James Monsees. They created a start-up in Silicon Valley after forming a bond over their passion for the harmful impact of smoking. “Ploom” was born, a butane powered e-cigarette that the pair launched in 2010. After more testing and experimenting, a sleeker, more compact, and in particular, a better flavoured device was launched, beginning Juul’s ascent to the top of the vaping world in 2015.
Juul’s controversies began early on, with their brand seemingly targeting under age young people. They gave out thousands of free devices, had celebrities with young followings like Cara Delevigne and Miley Cyrus promote their campaigns, and amped up their advertising on every social media platform possible.
Big Vape tells the full story of Juul, with testaments from former employees, young users and more. We are looking forward to learning how Juul may have been the catalyst for the vaping concerns and public health crisis we see today.
Hopefully Netflix brings us a cautionary tale packed full of intensity, controversy and education. Above all, give us a glimpse into the brief yet pivotal life of the Juul!
We will follow up with a review after we’ve finished the series.

Study Confirms Vaping Far Less Toxic Than Smoking
A replication study of an experiment on vaping vs smoking has demonstrated that vaping is far less toxic than tobacco cigarettes.
The study was overseen by the Center of Excellence for the acceleration of Harm Reduction of the University of Catania or CoEHAR and carried out by 5 separate university research teams. It was part of the “Replica Project” which looks to replicate previous studies conducted in the tobacco product industry in a high quality mannar.
A large reason for this replication study was that many of the studies done in this field have been conducted by the tobacco industry and would therefore constitute a conflict of interest. Since many of the studies have not been replicated or properly reviewed, the quality of the experiment and findings can be called into question. This study was aimed at making improvements in the research methodology, to try and bring a larger degree of reliability in the data and results.
In order to reduce bias and increase the reliability in the results, CoEHAR standardized or eliminated many of the variable factors in the original study. Some of the variables that were affected by this were nicotine levels, frequency of use, the analysis of the same cells in the throat, and participant history. Many previous findings used participants who were former smokers and would therefore have skewed health data in terms of their toxicity levels. The researchers decided to replicate the study using a method that is called “neutral red uptake”. Neutral red uptake is the standardized method used by the industry and is advised by the FDA and the European Commission in order to provide a toxicity profile update.
The largest factor in causing harm with tobacco-related products are the combustible products rather than the nicotine itself. The combustible products in traditional cigarettes expose people to over 400 different toxic compounds such as free radicals, nitrates and carbonyls. Vaping nicotine rather than smoking a cigarette eliminates these compounds from the equation, leading to far less harm on the user.
Part of the problem with previous studies and data is that some of it has been misleading or made to look inconclusive. While there is little to no one who would argue that nicotine use or vaping products are risk-free or harmless, the actual debate is whether it is more or less harmful than traditional smoking. Over five million people a year die because of tobacco-related products, a number that could potentially be reduced with less harmful alternatives. When polled, 90% of current smokers would switch to a less harmful product if they believed it to be safer. To quote CoEHAR Director Professor Giovanni Li Volti “If you are obese, your doctor will tell you to go on a diet. If you have high glycemia because you are diabetic, your doctor will give you insulin. If you are addicted to heroin, they might give you methadone – they switch you to a less harmful product. But if you smoke, they just tell you to quit smoking, like it’s very easy – but it’s not.”. It was found that only about 15% of people are able to just quit smoking, leaving 85% of people to potentially develop lung cancer or cardiovascular disease.
A criticism of previous data in this field is surrounding the long-term effects of vaping. In the past, it was argued that since vaping was still fairly new, no long-term studies could be conducted and would therefore have inconclusive results. Vaping has now been around for over a decade, allowing long-term studies to be carried out and investigated. In previous studies many of the subjects were previous smokers who had smoked for over 20 years, making it hard to determine if the toxicity was caused by their years of smoking or directly from vaping. We now have data from subjects who never smoked but have been exclusively vaping. This makes the data much more reliable since it will include much fewer variables.
The original study found that vaping was 95% less toxic than traditional smoking. The new study (using 5 separate measures in order to reduce variability) found that this was in fact true.
While it is still difficult to find research or articles in this area that is free from bias, the data within the studies and methodologies used can lend a large amount of credibility. It is always important to consider the source of funding, the organization conducting the study, as well as the quality of the actual experiment when reading about this topic. We at Canada Vapes strive to improve the lives of our customers and reduce the overall harm of smoking through our product offerings or with up-to-date scientific information. To once again quote Professor Giovanni Li Volti “Don’t forget there’s a huge percentage of people who are still smoking who would switch if they were correctly informed – so we have to reach those people. If we can, we have a 90% chance of reducing their chances of getting chronic diseases.”
Hopefully, this post has been helpful in informing you about vaping vs smoking and in potentially making the transition away from cigarettes. A link to the study is included below should you wish to read further.

5 Tips to Make Your Vaporizer Long Lasting
Vaporizers are becoming popular on the market used to vape e-liquid. They are also cost-effective as you can use a device for several months. Once you have the battery, your recurring costs will involve replacing coils and e-liquids. The frequency of replacing them depends on how often you use the device.
While replacing liquids is straightforward, the key to a long vaporizer lifespan is to maintain the coil. The cost of constantly replacing a burnt coil is a downside of vaping. Therefore,
1. Use the right coil
Purchase quality coils and vapes with replacement pods that will guarantee long life. Vape coils are strands of thin wire that connect with the base. When the coil and wick heat, the fluid turns into vapor to inhale. Every time you vape, the wick gets dry and sucks up more juice from the tank. Your device lifespan depends on using the best quality atomizer that will stand heating without burning.
Also, use the correct wicking material in your vaporizer. The materials include cotton, ceramic, stainless steel, and wool. Every coil has its characteristics, including wattage ratings and where it functions best. For example, organic cotton provides better flavors, while a vaporizer with ceramic heating element is durable and preserves flavors. Buy coils made for the specific device you use.
2. Clean your device often.
This might seem like an obvious thing, but some people may not regularly clean their devices. Regular maintenance of your device is the first route to increasing the vapes lifespan. Depending on your vaping habit, ensure you constantly remove residues from the vaporizer.
Like any other device, regular use stretches the coil. The coil receives the e-juice residue and grime that can block its functioning. If you are a chain smoker, ensure you clean your device once every week to get the best out of your device.
Apart from giving the device a long life, regular cleaning ensures you get clean hits. New coils and clean tanks offer better flavors that will stick forever. When cleaning the tank, remove any old juice residues. For example, rinse the coil with water to remove any juice traces. When cleaning the device, focus on the chamber, vapor path, and screens in the vapor path.
3. Use premium liquid
The type of e-liquid determines how long you will use your vaporizer. Today, you will find dozens of vape juices on the market with variant characteristics. Choose a liquid with less sweetener since sugar will gunk up the coil and prevent the wick from soaking new juice. A coil will burn if the wick is not adequately saturated.
Also, focus on liquids with PG bases for a long vape life. Vape juices containing high VG content can burn your coil. This is because they are thick and affect the wick from soaking. Therefore, use PG liquids that are thinner and dip into the wick well. These e-liquids with higher PG content make it easy for the coil to work.
Use the right e-juice that won’t damage your coils. Premium liquids can make a difference in your vaporizer lifespan. Avoid e-liquids that give more gunk and residue to the coil. Instead, use the liquid with a balanced proportion of VG and PG.
4. User appropriate temperatures
The life of a vaporizer depends on how you use it. Using high wattage’s during vaping can shorten the life of your device. It stresses the coil since the liquid burns faster, thus risking burning it. You can make your device long-lasting by using lower wattage settings on your battery. Check the temperature settings to ensure it doesn’t have high wattage that will cause the coil to dry quickly.
Temperature control prevents the wick from burning, allowing you to enjoy vaping for longer. This is where you set a maximum temperature for the vaporizer before vaping. Every time the coil reaches this maximum temperature, the battery stops delivering power. It prevents the wick from getting dry and burning quickly.
While high wattage’s produce enormous clouds, they will shorten the vape life and force you into constant replacing. High wattage makes the coil heat while struggling to soak up e-liquid. Reducing the power setting can extend the coil’s lifespan.
5. Prime new coils before using
One of the main tips to lengthen your vapes lifespan is to prime a new coil before using it. The coil will burn if you use it immediately without priming the atomizer head. Ensure you saturate the wick before you vape to stretch its lifespan. However, be careful not to over-saturate and flood the vape.
If you don’t prime it, the coil can burn straight away since it is too dry. Give it five minutes to saturate with the vape juice and be ready to heat. Alternatively, you can manually prime your coil if you don’t want to wait.
The Bottom Line
Vaporizers can have a long lifespan, depending on how you use them. Poor vaping habits can cause your coil to burn quickly and affect your vaping experience. If you want to avoid the cost of constantly replacing the coils, these tips can help lengthen the vapes’ lifespan. Ensure you apply them to stop the vape coil from quickly burning. While vaping is a great way to switch from cigarettes, your experience depends on taking proper care of the device.

Smartphone Battery Charges in 30 Seconds!
Awesome new battery charges in 30 seconds — When will this be available for your electronic cigarette?
In awesome tech news, a new battery that uses something called nanodots was just demonstrated at Microsoft’s Think next symposium. It is the brainchild of Israeli company StoreDot.
Not only does it manage to charge small batteries in under 30 seconds, it will charge larger batteries like car batteries in about a minute, making the possibilities of legitimate electric cars not too far out into the future. “Fuel up” in just a minute or two vs. the overnight plugging required in current electric cars would go a long way to making electric cars practical for more people to use.
StoreDot is in the process of patenting this technology, but is planning to go into mass production of this battery technology within the next two years. It is a much safer technology then any previous attempt at super fast charging batteries, and the cost for this technology will be relatively low.
This technology of super fast charging batteries, if it ends up being sustainable and legitimate will surely become the wave of the future and will change so many areas of our lives, including laptop and cell phones, portable devices, electric cars and scooters, and so much more. It will eventually even impact electronic cigarettes, who most of you are used to the double battery situation, having to always be charging a battery while using another. How about a quick 15 second charge of your e-cigarette battery and you are back on your way!
